Great Musicals For Kids Let Their Talents Shine

By Celia Hall

Great musicals for kids are available in many different lengths and themes. Most focus on giving parts for everyone to do. Plenty follow story lines that most every child will know, but there are also new musicals composed by talented authors, too. If you have never been part of a stage show and need help, you can also find that easily.

The goal when working with children is to help all of them participate to their best ability. Because educational theater groups are now presenting student musicals online for purchase, there is a wealth of information available. First time musical participants can enjoy the support that comes with the teacher guides, CD soundtracks, accompaniment tracks, licenses and clearly written student scripts.

For each large production there is a smaller one available too. Even when a group is small or inexperienced it is possible to find the right musical. Advertisements generally indicate the number of cast members required, how many lead parts are included and whether or not accompaniment tracks are available.

When budget constraints bring up worries about costuming students, look at online photo galleries of past shows. You can come up with some great tips for making simple, yet attractive costumes. Consider the information about costumes to be guidelines and inspiration rather than set in stone mandates.

Musicals are divided into solos, duets, groups and even audience participation. Compare the abilities your students have with the show requirements to see if you have the appropriate genders, number and age appropriate materials. If you want the audience to be a part of singing along, then choose music that is tried and true and very familiar. Your show will be more successful if you make the musical parts accessible to many.

The time it takes to get started with rehearsals is much less now that the entire materials may be paid for online and downloaded. Teachers or leaders can simply use a major credit card to purchase the show and then download and copy scripts and other documents right away. This is so much easier than looking through the local library of teacher supply store. Though libraries do offer excellent free options, if the budget allows, buying one online may offer better choices within a reasonable price range.

If you need extra inspiration for props, scenery and staging, just look through the online galleries presented by the companies selling their musicals. Many show recent productions in photo galleries to help clients with ideas for all of these things. You really can come up with your own versions after seeing what has been done before.

Great musicals for kids are available in short one act plays or longer presentations with many scenes and costume changes. Consider your children and how to best portray their new theatrical skills. Shorter running times and simpler costuming works best for very young children and smaller groups. You can do more when your students are older, or your support staff and budget are bigger. Whatever you choose, be certain to use the personalities and natural capabilities you already see in your group. Is this way, you can help everyone to enjoy the fun of putting on a music show, whether they have experience or not.
